Why Colour Rendering Index matters when luminous panels share a wall with paintings, photographs, and craft.
CRI scores are often treated as a checkbox. In practice, a panel at CRI 90+ still needs a spectral bin that flatters warm pigments under Cape Town evening light. We specify high CRI as a floor, then tune bins against the actual hang.
A cool 4000K bin with excellent CRI can still make timber and skin look tired after sunset. For residential art walls we favour 2700–3000K with CRI ≥ 90 and R9 that holds reds. See Gallery Strip and Aura Canvas.
Trade note: Sample on site after sunset whenever possible, Highveld and coastal evenings shift how bins feel.
Ask for spectral power distribution, not only CRI. Sample against the largest canvas in the hang. Dim to 15% and re-check skin and pigment. Link the schedule to culture & galleries when the hang is museum-grade.
