Warm vs cool colour temperature for living rooms

How to choose Kelvin bins that flatter South African evenings, without turning the lounge into a clinic or a cave.

Most living-room briefs arrive with a single number: 3000K, or “warm white.” Colour temperature is useful, but it is not the whole story. Start with how the room is used

A lounge that hosts dinner guests wants a different spectral feel to a media nook used for late work. We typically recommend:

• 2700–3000K for evening hospitality and family living, softer on skin, kinder to timber floors.
• 3500K only where tasks matter (reading corners, craft tables) and even then as a layer, not the whole field.
• Avoid defaulting to 4000K+ in living rooms unless the architecture is deliberately cool and the finishes can carry it.

Warmth is more than Kelvin

Two panels at 3000K can still feel different. Spectral bins, diffuser stacks, and dimming curves change how reds and skin tones render. At Bright Display we favour bins tuned for residential evenings, not warehouse lumen counts.

Practical SA checklist

• Test samples after sunset, not only at midday site meetings.
• Account for large north-facing glass: cool daylight floods in; evening light should recover warmth.
• Dim to 10–20% for late evenings; if the bin shifts green or pink, reject the driver curve.
